Google Master Account

What your Google Master Account is (& why you shouldn’t log in)

When we started working together, we created a Gmail email address for your organization that we call a Google Master Account (GMA). This Google account is what we use to sign up for all of the platforms necessary to make your website and digital marketing work, from WP Engine to Google Tag Manager to Facebook’s API.

When we launch a new website, we give you the account information for this GMA, because it’s important to us that you own your website and all the tools that go along with it. However, you should not log into your GMA.

What does a Google Master Account do?

A GMA is a behind-the-scenes account that keeps your website and other digital marketing tools running smoothly in three ways:

1

A relay between you and your website

The GMA receives messages sent by your website, such as contact form and password reset notifications, and automatically forwards them to the right people. Many websites also use the GMA for authentication, ensuring notifications from your website are not flagged as spam.

2

Authentication for third-party services

The GMA securely connects your website to services like Google Cloud, Facebook, Bit.ly, and other APIs.

3

Ownership of digital tools

The GMA is the administrator of your Google Analytics, Tag Manager, and Search Console properties, as well as other key services.

Why shouldn’t you log in to your GMA?

Your GMA is responsible for a lot of the features that make your website valuable to your business. Logging into your GMA can impact whether or not these features work because of disruptions to security and permissions settings. When you log in to your GMA, it may also impact Parkway’s ability to log in, making it harder and even more time-consuming to determine if your GMA is still performing as required.

What should you do instead?

If you have questions or need access to a tool owned by your GMA, please reach out! We’ll ensure you have the right access through your own account.

For access to tools like Google Analytics, we recommend creating your own Google account, which we can then add to the accounts owned by your GMA.
